Obesity in Dogs and Cats: The Surprising Costs of Those Extra-Treats

Every pet parent wants the best for their furry friend – delicious food, playtime and plenty of treats. However, gestures of affection, such as generous portions or frequent snacks, can have unintended consequences. Pet obesity has become a serious global problem, affecting not only quality of life but also lifespan. According to a recent study from 2023, 65% of dogs and 60% of cats are overweight or obese. This is not just a cosmetic issue – obesity is associated with conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiovascular disease, causing discomfort and significantly reducing life expectancy.   How Can We Recognise the Signs of Obesity in Pets? 1. Visible physical changes Ribs that are difficult to feel beneath the coat and fat. A sagging abdomen and a poorly defined waist. Noticeable fat deposits, especially around the tail or along the back. 2. Behavioural changes Less interest in playing or exercising. Tiring quickly, even after light activity. Reluctance to climb stairs or jump. 3. Signs of poor health Laboured breathing or difficulty breathing. Limping or discomfort when moving. Increased thirst and urination – possible signs of diabetes.   The Impact of Obesity on Pet Health Obesity is not just a weight issue; it affects a pet's entire body. Here are some of the associated risks: Diabetes mellitusExcess weight can lead to increased insulin resistance, raising the risk of diabetes, especially in cats. Joint problems and reduced mobilityExtra weight puts pressure on the joints, leading to arthritis or other orthopaedic problems. Cardiovascular and respiratory diseasesExtra fat around the chest and abdomen can make breathing difficult and put strain on the heart. Reduced organ functionThe liver and kidneys are more susceptible to damage caused by excess fat. Reduced lifespanStudies show that obese pets have a life expectancy up to two years shorter than those at a healthy weight. How Can We Prevent and Tackle Obesity? Preventing and managing obesity involves three key pillars: appropriate nutrition, regular exercise and careful monitoring. 1. Portion Control Measure food accurately: Avoid estimating portions by eye and use a kitchen scale or measuring cup. Regular feeding: Divide meals into two-three portions a day, following your vet's recommendations. Healthy snacks: Replace high-calorie treats with pieces of carrot, apple or other low-calorie options.   2. A Tailored Diet Choose a balanced food with reduced fat and calorie content. High-fibre diets help your pet feel full without increasing calorie intake. Consult a vet to determine the best diet for your pet's needs. 💡 Recommended products: Food for overweight dogs Food for overweight cats   3. Exercise and Physical Stimulation Regular exercise helps burn excess calories and maintain muscle tone. For dogs: Daily walks of 15-30 minutes. Activities such as fetch or swimming (ideal for dogs with joint problems). Agility courses or interactive games with toys. For cats: Interactive toys, such as laser pointers or feather wands. Puzzle feeders that encourage movement while eating. Climbing structures, such as cat trees. 4. Monitoring and Motivation Track progress: Weigh your pet regularly and record any changes. Celebrate milestones: Reward weight loss with a new toy or a longer play session.   When Should You Consult a Vet? If your furry friend has difficulty moving, refuses to eat or shows other unusual symptoms, it is time to consult a vet. They may recommend: A personalised weight loss plan. Therapeutic diets. Exercise tailored to their health.   The Benefits of Weight Loss Even a modest weight loss of 10% of body weight can bring significant benefits: Reduced joint pain. Improved respiratory function. Increased energy levels and eagerness to play.   Conclusion Obesity in dogs and cats is more than a physical issue – it is a health problem that requires attention and immediate action. By choosing the right food, introducing physical activity and carefully monitoring progress, you can help your furry friend live a healthier, happier life. De ce este esențial să hrănim și să stimulăm corect pisicile noastre?

Why is it essential to give our cats proper nutrition and stimulation?

Cats are adorable yet complex pets whose needs go beyond food and a place to rest. Their physical and mental health depends on proper nutrition as well as an environment that stimulates their natural instincts. In this article, we will explore how a quality diet, combined with interactive activities and a stimulating environment, can help your cat lead a happy, balanced life.   Food: more than a necessity, a path to optimal health Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they require animal protein to maintain their health and vitality. A balanced diet can help them avoid a range of health problems and enjoy a long life. What should your cat's food contain? Quality protein: Sources such as chicken, fish and lamb are ideal for supporting muscle mass and vital functions. Taurine: An essential amino acid for heart and eye health. Healthy fats: Omega-3 and Omega-6 are essential for a shiny coat and healthy skin. Vitamins and minerals: Cats need a balanced intake to keep their immune system functioning optimally. Wet food vs. dry food Wet food: Ideal for cats that do not drink enough water, it helps prevent kidney problems. Dry food: Useful for dental hygiene, but requires additional water intake.   Special needs: when and why to choose tailored diets Every cat is different, and their diet should reflect their life stage, health and unique needs: Kittens: Need food rich in calories and nutrients for healthy development. Adult cats: A balanced diet prevents common issues such as obesity or urinary problems. Senior cats: Have specific needs to support joint and kidney health. Cats with medical conditions, such as kidney failure or food sensitivities, benefit from special veterinary diets that can significantly improve their quality of life.   Play: the key to an active mind and a healthy body Alongside nutrition, physical and mental activity play an essential role in cats' lives. Play allows them to express their natural instincts, burn off excess energy and avoid destructive behaviour. Why is play important? For physical health: Activity prevents obesity and supports mobility. For mental health: Cognitive stimulation reduces anxiety and boredom. For bonding with you: Play strengthens the relationship between you and your cat.   How do you choose the right toys? Interactive toys: Wand toys, feathers or motorised toys that mimic natural prey. Puzzle feeders: Combine play with feeding to stimulate your cat's mind. Climbing spaces: Cat trees and shelves that provide a safe place to explore.   Creating a stimulating environment for your cat A stimulating environment is vital to your cat's wellbeing. Adding features such as climbing structures, boxes and tunnels can turn your space into an engaging place. How can you create an ideal environment? Climbing areas: Install shelves or cat trees that provide opportunities for exercise and a sense of security. Puzzle feeders: Encourage mental and physical activity at mealtimes. Outdoor exploration: If possible, set up a catio or train your cat to walk on a harness.   A happy cat: a balance between nutrition and activity A happy cat is one that gets the right food and regular opportunities to play and explore. By providing these, you support your cat's long-term health and help keep your relationship strong and harmonious.   Conclusion: Prioritise your cat's health and happiness Cats are more than just pets – they are members of the family. Choosing high-quality food and creating a stimulating environment are essential steps towards giving them a healthy, happy life. Is my dog obese?

We love our pet very much, so we want to see them happy, even when we give them an extra pouch of food. The snacks we lovingly share during our meals or foods rich in calories are just some of the things our pets crave. Unfortunately, this is not good for our furry friend's health, and our love must be reflected in healthy choices for them.  Obesity in dogs is an increasingly common problem, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP). In 2018, they conducted  a survey showing that 56% of pet dogs are overweight or obese.  Obesity is a serious condition that increases the risk of chronic diseases, shortens lifespan and affects quality of life. The good news is that it can be managed with a little care, plenty of love and a few simple changes. ❤️ Is my dog obese?     The signs are subtle but important: Ribs can no longer be easily felt. A barely visible or absent waistline. Tiring quickly during everyday activities. Difficulty moving or playing.   How can my dog return to their ideal weight?     🔹 Balanced Nutrition:    Dog food designed for weight loss should be rich in protein and fibre, but low in fat. Protein helps stimulate metabolism and increase energy expenditure, while also providing a feeling of fullness so your dog does not feel the need to eat again too soon after a meal. Fibre, on the other hand, helps maintain that feeling of fullness while being low in calories.    Provide a nutritionally balanced meal and reduce daily calorie intake across all meals. Together, these should contain 60-70% calories, with the rest consisting of protein, fibre and fat, as follows:   Protein: 18%-23% to maintain muscle mass. Fat: 10%-15% to reduce calorie density. Fibre: 10%-15% to increase the feeling of fullness.   For this, we recommend the cold pressed food Prins ProCare Diet Pressed Weight Control & Diabetic Support because it is rich in crude protein (30%) and fibre (15%), and low in fat (10%).  Cold pressed food is also much more filling thanks to its production process. You can find more details here.    🔹 Daily Exercise:    Increasing your dog's physical activity is vital for weight loss. Whether it is a longer walk (15-30 minutes), a run or interactive games, any physical activity will help them burn stored energy. We recommend exercise at least 2 times a day. Before you begin, speak to your vet to make sure your furry friend does not have any conditions associated with obesity, such as arthritis or heart disease, which could limit physical activity.    🔹 Cut Out Uncontrolled Snacking:    Replace treats rich in calories with healthy alternatives. Starterkit baking mix is one option, as it is rich in crude protein (26,4%) and fibre (19,8%) and low in fat (1,9%).    🔹 Personalised Weight Loss Plan:    Work with your vet to create a plan that includes both the right diet for your dog's health conditions and monitoring their weight loss progress.  For Prins ProCare Diet Weight Control Diabetes our recommended daily feeding amounts are as follows:    Benefits of a Healthy Weight   A dog who returns to their ideal weight not only looks good but feels better too! You will notice increased energy levels, improved mobility and a reduced risk of conditions such as heart disease or joint problems. Because We Love Them   Our dogs are part of the family, and the care we take of their health truly reflects our unconditional love. With small, steady steps, we can give them a longer, more active and happier life – exactly what they deserve. 🌟🐶   Let's set out on this journey to better health together! Every step is an act of love. ❤️

Caring for and Training Your Dog: The Key to a Balanced and Happy Relationship

Dogs are our loyal companions, giving us unconditional love and unforgettable moments. However, to enjoy a harmonious relationship with them, we need to understand the importance of proper care and training. From nutrition and health to behaviour and training, every aspect of care contributes to your dog’s overall wellbeing.   1. Nutrition: Fuel for a Healthy Life A dog’s food directly affects their health, energy and mood. Choosing the right food depends on several factors, such as age, size, activity level and any health problems. Young dogs (puppies): Need food rich in protein and nutrients to support rapid growth. Adult dogs: A balanced diet that maintains their energy levels and overall health is essential. Senior dogs: May benefit from lower-calorie food with joint supplements. 💡 Tip: Consult a vet to tailor your dog’s diet to their unique needs.   2. Grooming Routine: More Than Just Appearance Regular grooming is not just about keeping your dog looking good, but also about preventing health problems. Coat and skin: Regular brushing prevents tangles and helps detect skin problems early. Ears: Regular cleaning reduces the risk of infections. Teeth: Good oral hygiene prevents dental problems and bad breath. Nails: Regular trimming prevents discomfort and difficulty walking.   3. Training: A Well-Trained Dog Is a Happy Dog Training is the key to a well-behaved dog and a harmonious relationship with their owner. Whether you are working on basic training or advanced commands, time spent learning is a valuable investment. Basic training Sit, stay, come: These are essential commands for control and safety. Socialisation: Introduce your dog to people and other animals to help them become friendly and confident in different situations.   Managing unwanted behaviours Pulling on the leash: A common problem that can be corrected with practice and patience. Use a harness with a front attachment and reward your dog for the desired behaviour. Excessive barking: Identify the cause (boredom, anxiety, territorial behaviour) and address it with positive reinforcement training. Stealing food: Remove temptations, keep food out of reach and teach your dog commands such as “leave it”.   4. Physical and Mental Activity: A Busy Mind Is a Happy Mind Dogs need physical and mental stimulation to prevent boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviour. Physical exercise: Daily walks, runs or playtime in the park are essential for burning off energy. Mental stimulation: Puzzle toys, scent training and learning new tricks keep your dog's mind active. Daily routine: Establishing a consistent schedule for meals, play and sleep creates a predictable and reassuring environment.   5. Regular Vet Visits: Prevention Is Key Preventive care is essential for your dog's long-term health. Vaccinations and parasite treatments: Provide protection against common diseases. Routine check-ups: Help detect potential health problems early. Spaying or neutering: Helps prevent behavioural and medical problems.   6. The Emotional Connection: Building a Bond of Trust Dogs are social animals that thrive in an environment full of love and attention. Your relationship with your dog is built on trust, respect and affection. Playing together: Strengthens your bond and gives your dog a sense of belonging. Positive rewards: Praise, treats and time spent together show your dog they are appreciated. Patience and consistency: Are fundamental to training and care.   7. Adapting Care to Your Dog's Age and Needs As your dog grows, their needs change: Puppies: Need food formulated for growth and early socialisation. Adult dogs: Need a balance of exercise, food and attention. Senior dogs: Need a special diet, gentle exercise and more frequent veterinary check-ups.     Conclusion: Caring for Your Dog Is Both a Responsibility and a Joy Every dog is unique, and their needs may vary depending on breed, age and temperament. Proper care and training not only improve your dog's quality of life but also strengthen your bond. With consistent attention, love and a tailored approach, your dog can enjoy a long, healthy and happy life by your side. The journey of dog ownership is full of lessons and rewards, and every moment spent with your furry friend is an investment in your shared happiness.   Want to give your dog the very best products?Discover our selection of food, toys and accessories for every breed and need at www.krause-doggy.ro. 🐾

Which brush do you use?

Choosing the right brush strengthens the bond with your pet. With the right tools, grooming becomes an enjoyable experience for both of you. Choosing the right brush for your dog is very important. An unsuitable brush can make your pet dislike being brushed. The wrong brush can hurt them if its teeth are too stiff for their sensitive skin.  It may also fail to detangle their coat.  The right brush for your dog depends on their coat type. Below are five types of brushes and the coat types they are suitable for.  Choosing the right brush for each coat type: Medium-long and curly coats: Use a slicker brush to remove tangles and work through knots. Use gentle strokes to avoid irritating the skin. Thick double coats: Opt for a rake (grooming rake), which helps remove dead undercoat and tangles. Use it carefully on heavily tangled areas. Short coats: Choose a bristle brush, perfect for removing loose hair and distributing natural oils. It can be used daily to manage shedding. All coat types: Pin brush: Ideal for finishing brushing, smoothing the coat and removing any remaining dirt. Flea comb: Useful for detecting and removing fleas, and essential to your flea prevention routine. During our research, we discovered Ann, who explains the different types of brushes in just a few seconds.  What Kind of Brush Should You Use for your Pet? – Grooming Brushes Overview – Gina’s Grooming Sources:Information: https://wags2richesgrooming.com/choosing-the-right-brush-for-pet-coat-types/  https://www.petmd.com/dog/general-health/tips-for-a-healthy-dog Images: https://ro.pinterest.com/pin/633387421773311/ https://ro.pinterest.com/pin/300052393900575292/

3 secrete pentru sănătatea pisicii și câinelui tău

3 secrets to keeping your cat and dog healthy

Your furry friend's health starts with a simple step: regular brushing! Although it may seem like a small task, neglecting coat care can have serious negative effects on their wellbeing. Here are 3 secrets to keeping your pet's coat and skin healthy, whether you have a dog or a cat: 1. Keep their coat clean A healthy coat is essential for every furry friend. It gives them a sense of wellbeing. Unfortunately, an unbrushed coat can quickly become a major problem. A lack of regular grooming leads to mats that restrict movement, skin irritation caused by a build-up of dead hair and the risk of parasites such as fleas or ticks. All of this means discomfort for your pet, as well as stress for you and costly vet visits. Here's what you can do! 2. Choose the right brush: Short coats need a brush with fine pins. For dogs or cats with long coats, choose a brush with long pins to work through tangles. Wavy coats need a special brush to prevent tangles. 3. Create a routine Brushing 2-3 times a week with a technique suited to your pet's coat type can work wonders. We've created a special guide for you, so you don't have to keep searching. Turn this activity into a moment of relaxation and bonding.   Bonus 4. Reward your pet (perhaps the most important part)   Make this an enjoyable moment by giving your pet a reward. This will help your pet feel happy and appreciated. The reward could be a treat, some playtime or a little affection. Coat care is very important for the health of your cat and dog. Even if your pet dislikes being brushed at first, these 3 secrets will soon put an end to the fuss!    Sources: Treats: https://krause-doggy.ro/?s=recompense+pisici&post_type=product&type_aws=true  Images: dog and cat , curly-coated dog , shaggy dog Information: https://wags2richesgrooming.com/choosing-the-right-brush-for-pet-coat-types/  https://www.petmd.com/dog/general-health/tips-for-a-healthy-dog

What is cold-pressed pet food?

In this article, we will explain the key characteristics of cold-pressed pet food.   There are many brands and types of cat and dog food that claim to be excellent for your pet, but how can you be sure?   It is very important to give your pet the diet they need. You do not want to buy unsuitable food that could affect their digestion or health!   Today, we are taking a closer look at cold-pressed pet food. Is it a trend we should take seriously?     What makes cold-pressed pet food different?   Photo by @dmiyabara Cold-pressed food differs from conventional kibble in the way it is made.      Cold-pressed food is processed at a lower temperature (45-80C) than other types of dry food, which are processed at higher temperatures (at least 100C). Because the cold-pressing process uses lower temperatures, more of the raw ingredients, such as meat and even vegetables, are preserved, as they do not break down due to high heat. This helps retain heat-sensitive nutrients in every piece of kibble.    Two types of dry pet food are available in shops. The most common is kibble, technically known as “extruded kibble”. It undergoes a complex process called extrusion, which makes it crunchy, unlike cold-pressed food, which is dense.    The extrusion process has several steps. The first (3) involves adding water as steam at a temperature of 75 – 80 C and mixing the raw ingredients. Step two (4) is extrusion, which takes place at temperatures between 100 and 140C. The temperature changes make the kibble crunchy.      Step two also involves cutting the kibble into the desired shapes using moulds. The third step (5) is drying the kibble at temperatures between 65 – 80 C. The fourth step (6) involves adding and measuring oils. The fifth step (7) is cooling the kibble to temperatures of 10-15 C.    The pressing process consists of 4 steps, only two of which use water or steam. Let's look at the first step (3): mixing the raw ingredients using steam at a temperature between 75 – 80 C.    In step two(4), the ingredients are sent to a press for pressing. In step three(5), the kibble is cooled to a temperature of 10-15 C, and in step four(6), whole pieces of kibble are separated from broken ones. They are then packaged and sent to stores.   Cold-pressed food comes in the form of compact, dense kibble. Because the food is pressed and filling, retaining all the nutrients and vitamins from the raw ingredients, your pet needs less dry food.    This is why this type of food is suitable for pets with digestive problems. Cold-pressed food breaks down into a powder in the stomach, making it easier for the intestines to absorb the nutrients the body needs.      So, less food with just as many nutrients!     Cold-pressed food recommendations   Cold-pressed food is suitable for all breeds and ages, from puppies and adolescents to adults and seniors. What makes cold-pressed food particularly interesting is its wider variety. You can find options for specific needs, such as active dogs, dogs on vegan diets or highly active dogs.    JUNIOR     Prins ProCarePuppy& Junior – Puppy Food  with chicken and turkey is suitable for medium and large breed puppies from 4 weeks to 12 months of age. Ce beneficii are mâncarea presată la rece?

What are the benefits of cold-pressed food?

In a stressful world, we try to prevent even the smallest problems. That same concern extends to our pets. Choosing what is healthiest for your dog or cat becomes crucial for you too. The vast range of pet foods offers options that vary in how healthy they are for our pets. With this in mind, pet lovers have introduced a new approach to preparing food, cold pressed food. It is rapidly gaining popularity thanks to its promising benefits. Understanding this type of food will help you make informed, suitable choices for your pet's diet.   Cold pressed food, made for our four-legged friends, is produced using a process that helps preserve the nutritional value of meat, vegetables and other raw ingredients. Experts have come to regard it as a superior alternative to traditional kibble. You can read this article for all the details you need about the process.  THE BENEFITS OF COLD PRESSED FOOD   Because cold pressed food is made at a low temperature (75-80C), the food in your pet's bowl contains more nutrients as they are not broken down by heat. For this reason, it is recommended for pets from 4 weeks of age through to their senior years. The production process reduces bacterial levels in the food, making it perfect for puppies with sensitive tummies. Cold pressed kibble also contains no added thickening agents or synthetic fats. Cold pressed food reduces the risk of poor digestion.  BETTER DIGESTION The digestive process in pets can take 4 to 6 hours so if your pet eats a large amount of dry food, digestion can take much longer.  Traditional kibble is much more resistant to the gastric juices in pets' stomachs. As shown in the image below, the three glasses on the right illustrate 3 stages of digestion for standard kibble. The first glass contains cold pressed kibble. Thanks to the pressing process, the kibble breaks down into a powder in your pet's stomach.  So we can rest assured that our pets can maintain their healthy routine even during digestion.    SKIN AND COAT HEALTH Thanks to the cold pressing production process, the kibble retains much higher levels of natural essential oils and omega fatty acids. Just like skincare products that use essential oils and omega fatty acids to keep skin smooth and healthy, these substances help hydrate your pet's skin barrier, ensuring a soft, healthy and shiny coat. A healthy coat and skin mean less irritation and fewer scratches!  Cold pressing prevents the formation of harmful particles in food that are known to affect a dog's skin, coat and metabolism. PERFECT FOR FUSSY EATERS If your pet is a “fussy eater”, you already know how frustrating mealtimes can be. Your pet may refuse everything in their bowl or eat only certain parts of the food you offer. Because cold pressed food from Prins uses high quality raw ingredients, such as beef, pork, turkey, lamb, vegetables (carrots, beetroot, peas, etc.) and grains such as rice, the kibble is much richer in nutrients and vitamins than standard kibble.  This new type of food, cold pressed food, is reshaping the way pet owners approach canine nutrition.  PRINS COLD PRESSED FOOD  Since 1963, Prins has made finding the perfect food for dogs and cats its priority. Prins operates in accordance with the GMP+ and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) quality systems. These ensure that all Prins products are manufactured under safe, hygienic conditions.  Prins places great emphasis on food safety, which is why its raw ingredients are 100% natural. Its certified laboratory monitors the production process by performing 65 analyses per week to ensure that Prins food meets the highest standards.    A WIDE RANGE OF PRODUCTS Cold pressed food is suitable for every breed and age, from puppies and adolescents to adults and seniors. What makes it particularly interesting is its greater variety. You can find an option for specific needs, such as active dogs, dogs on a vegan diet or highly active dogs.    JUNIOR Prins ProCarePuppy& Junior – Puppy Food  with chicken and turkey is suitable for medium and large breed puppies from 4 weeks to 12 months old. You can find more information in the product description.   ADOLESCENTS Prins ProCare Standard Fit – Food for Less Active or Neutered Dogs – Chicken and Turkey is a complete pressed food for adult dogs with moderate energy requirements. Its adjusted energy content helps your dog stay in optimal condition. Carefully selected ingredients support healthy skin and a shiny coat, optimal digestion and balanced gut flora.   ADULTS ProCare Herring & Rice  with herring and rice is suitable for sensitive adult dogs. Herring helps reduce hypersensitivity reactions, while algae oil is a stable source of essential fatty acids such as Omega3. And that is not all: you can find more information in the product description.   SENIOR    Prins ProCare Senior Fit – Adult Dog Food, with chicken and turkey, is suitable for senior dogs of medium and large breeds aged around 8 years. Enriched with salmon oil and probiotics, it helps maintain heart and kidney function, among other benefits. You can find more information in the product description.   VEGGIE Prins ProCare Veggie – Food for Sensitive Adult Dogs is made with high quality rice, whose protein supports dogs that are sensitive to other protein sources. Here is a brief recap of past events: Dog Shows in Medgidia and Câmpia Turzii From 15 to 17 March, we joined the canine community in Medgidia, and then, on 6 April, we joined dog lovers in Câmpia Turzii for dog shows full of charm and elegance. We were delighted to offer special prizes to the participating dogs and enjoy memorable moments with these four-legged friends. Dog Training Competitions in Ionești and Sfântu Gheorghe From 1-3 March, we were in Ionești, Dâmbovița County, and then, from 18 to 20 April, we turned our attention to Sfântu Gheorghe, Covasna County, for dog training competitions filled with passion and dedication. It was a wonderful opportunity to support the impressive skills of German Shepherds and share the joy with everyone there.
